Sample U, a privately held company, was founded on the Campus of Alliant International University in San Diego, California as an experiment laboratory in which consumers (called Trysumers) become part of the decision making process of product development. Through controlled and measured interaction with products, Trysumers give product developers and marketers the insight they need to create products that deliver true value to the marketplace.

Sample U researchers found that the value did not stop with the research data they compiled, but it continued through the natural brand loyalty created from the Trysumers’ interactive experience with the products. These Trysumers get excited about the experience and have the feeling that their opinion matters, which is something lacking in today’s mass production retail environment. Trysumers develop affinity for the products and brands they test. Trysumers are asked to evangelize the products to friends through word-of-mouth and online social networks in exchange for receiving free samples. The compounded result of all this is emotionally driven brand loyalty and increased sales for the participating product brands.

On opening day of the research center in San Diego, over 600 Trysumers waited in line for a chance to take part in evaluating products and receiving free samples for their work. The research center expected to stay open for 2-weeks to conduct its testing. In reality, it collected all the data needed and ran out of free product samples in just 48 hours! The media storm that erupted from the opening event put Sample U and Alliant University in the minds of marketers and product managers of companies Worldwide.

Sample U has expanded its research centers, called TryStores, nationwide and plans to expand to Europe, South America and Asia in 2011.
